A. Introduction
- Transition/Review: Review what we have learned about plants: what they
need to grow, kinds of plants.
- Motivation: Have several terrariums to show children and stimulate their
interest.
- Statement of Main Problem: We will create our own ecosystem in a terranium.
- Value of the lession: Follow sequential directions, a very important skill,
especially when you do science experiments
B. Development
- Use pocket chart to learn facts about terrariums
- Have children echo-read the four facts on the chart.
- Have children fill in the blanks on their application page using the facts on
the chart
- Review application page together.
- Begin making terrariums.
- Have materials boxed/
- grouped for each group (soda bottle halves, pepples, charcoal).
- Explain directions:
- First, place pebbles on bottom of once bottle.
- Second, spinkle a little charcoal over the pebbles.
- Next, put 5-6 spoonfuls of soil in bottle bottom. **Remind them that they
need to take turns and wait patiently for their turn.**
- Aftter you have put soil in, make three holes in your soil. (Plant the
small plants and seeds in these holes.
- Finally, using the water bottle, spray three sprays on the plants.
- Then return to your seat and raise your terrarium. Be sure you wash
your hands!!!
- When you have finished, write in your observation log about the experiment and
draw a picture of your terrarium.
C. Summary/Evaluation
Review why the terrarium will live on its own and we will not have to
water it. Perfomance based evaluation will be used; we will observe the students
as they create their terrarium.
